Like our outstanding hospitalist program. Composed of board certified Internal Medicine physicians, our hospitalists care for patients during their hospital stay. And they ensure that the patient’s primary care physician is always kept up-to-date on their progress.
We’ve also added new family practice locations in Keysville, Burkeville, Farmville, Cumberland and Victoria.

A More Comfortable Birthing Experience
Bringing a new family member into this world is a momentous event. That’s why we built a new, patient-focused Birth Center in 2007 that features all-private labor and delivery rooms, state-of-the-art technology and luxury amenities, like flat-screen televisions, DVD players and wireless Internet. Families will also find that our obstetricians and nurses are among the most passionate and caring in the field.
A Decade of Sleep Solutions
For more than 10 years, Centra Southside Community Hospital has been helping patients achieve the restful sleep they need. We offer the only sleep lab in the area, and we’re proud to acknowledge the great work our team provides the community. Studies show that a good night’s sleep is vital to good health.
A Network of Neurosurgical Experts
In the past, patients would have to leave town to be seen for complex diseases of the spine and brain. Today, neurosurgeons from Central Virginia Neurosurgery in Lynchburg see patients locally. From herniated discs and pinched nerves to carotid artery disease and brain tumors, neurosurgeons work with the patient’s primary care physician to provide the best treatment options.
Centra Heart Specialists
Seven cardiologists from the Centra Stroobants Heart Center are now part of our expanded cardiac team. Our range of cardiovascular studies has also expanded and now includes nuclear testing, carotid ultrasound, venous ultrasound, lower extremity arterial studies, stress testing, echocardiography, stress echo, Holter monitors and event monitors. We also offer our new multidisciplinary cardiopulmonary rehabilitation program, which not only treats patients but teaches them about their disease and how to make the most appropriate lifestyle changes.
A Better Place in Case of Emergency
Our state-of-the-art emergency department is staffed by highly trained physicians and nurses. We’ve invested in a new laboratory for improved diagnostic efficiency and customer service, as well as the latest cardiac ultrasound machines to better diagnose a heart attack. We have access to helicopter and ambulance services to get the patient here—or wherever they need to be—at a moment’s notice. We recently added a dedicated fast-track system for less serious injuries or illnesses. And for greater patient comfort, we have increased the level of privacy in our treatment rooms.
A Better Place Through Technology
Today’s technologies have made our world smaller and brought us together in new ways. And Centra Southside Community Hospital is leading the curve with investments in the latest diagnostic imaging and information technologies.
Our new MRI increases the speed and accuracy of diagnosis for such illnesses as breast cancer. Our CT scanners allow physicians to better examine bodily structures and plan treatment. We’ve also invested in new cardiac ultrasound technology, which will be linked directly to Centra Lynchburg’s cardiology department, through our relationship with the Centra Stroobants Heart Center.
Our picture archiving and communication system (PACS) allows physicians to send digital test results to specialists in Lynchburg when a patient is transferred, or for a second opinion. PACS handles a variety of medical imaging tests, including ultrasound, MRI, PET/CT scanning and mammography. Images are accessible from any physician’s desktop computer or PDA device for easy access and review. Additionally, Centra hospitals were recognized among the “Top 25 Most Wireless Hospitals” and “Top 100 Most Wired Hospitals” in the country by Hospital & Health Networks magazine. By using digital technology to securely store clinical and financial information, critical data like doctors’ orders, medications and test results can be quickly accessed.
And to make recovery fun, patients can better enjoy their physical therapy by playing games on a Nintendo® Wii™.

Personalized Menus
At Centra Southside, we want to make each meal as appealing as possible. That’s why in September 2006 we partnered with Morrison Healthcare Food Services to deliver the best menus to patients. Each day, our catering associates visit patients to review their meal plans, discuss preferences and offer personalized menu services.
A Classroom for Nurses
Throughout our history, Centra Southside Community Hospital has attracted some of the most highly trained nurses in the region. To enhance the education and excellence of area nurses, we’ve partnered with Longwood University to offer a Nursing Degree Program that provides hands-on training and support for nursing students. We’ve also partnered with Southside Virginia Community College to provide similar programs.
A Better Place for People Who Care
Improving the quality of our community’s health is a full-time job. That’s why Centra Southside Community Hospital is proactive in bringing additional, full-time, board certified physicians and specialists to join our established team, as well as new medical practices to the communities we serve. We’ve recently welcomed:
- Drs. Judith Chantelois and Jerry Lucas, both OB/GYN specialists.
- Drs. Kona and Le Noach, orthopedic surgeons specializing in minimally invasive joint surgery and joint replacement.
- Dr. Al-Ani, a pediatrician and former Delegate Resident at Woodhull Medical Center, an affiliate of New York University School of Medicine.
- Dr. Townsend, a pediatric and adult congenital cardiologist.
- Rev. Willie Smith, Jr., Chaplain Coordinator with a Masters in Clinical Pastoral Education.
Centra Southside Community Hospital will continue to grow and enhance our team of expert doctors, nurses and technicians. We will pay attention to the needs of our medical and community leadership. Benefits for Our Community
At Centra Southside Community Hospital, we’re committed to bringing Southside the best care. Recently, the Farmville Volunteer Fire Department received three defibrillators through a grant from the Centra Foundation. We also purchased a Futrex Blood Pressure Monitoring Kiosk, a new state-of-the-art blood pressure and body fat monitoring system, for the local YMCA through a second grant from the Centra Foundation. Centra Southside also regularly supports community groups and organizations like “Look Good…Feel Better,” a support group for female cancer patients, Diabetic Education Class, Meals on Wheels, Alcoholics Anonymous, Diabetes Education and Support Group and the Virginia Blood Services Blood Mobile.
